General Questions

Teeth whitening is a type of cosmetic dentistry that uses medical-grade solutions to eradicate stains and discoloration from your teeth. At Silicon Valley Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, the team uses the Philips Zoom! system. This can make your teeth up to *eight shades whiter in just one treatment session. Although the results won’t last forever, with proper care, they can brighten your teeth for months at a time.

If you’ve noticed that your teeth are yellow or discolored, you aren’t alone. Believe it or not, this occurs as part of the natural aging process. Over the years, the outer layer of your teeth (enamel) wears away due to biting and chewing. This wearing reveals the inner layer of your teeth (dentin), which is naturally yellow. The more enamel that wears away, the more yellow your teeth appear. Other factors that cause your teeth to lose their pearly white appearance include using tobacco, drinking dark-colored beverages like coffee or red wine, and taking certain medications.

Teeth whitening is safe and well-tolerated. The majority of professional whitening systems use carbamide peroxide, a harmless byproduct of hydrogen peroxide, to whiten your teeth. Before being released to the general public, teeth whitening treatments undergo years of testing and research by regulatory bodies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This ensures your safety and stunning results.

A teeth whitening appointment begins with your Silicon Valley Center for Cosmetic Dentistry provider covering your gums and tongue with a rubber dam. After placing the dam, your provider carefully applies a bleaching solution to the surface of each tooth. The solution sits for 15 minutes or so, and your provider points a special light at your teeth. The light triggers a chemical bleaching reaction that eliminates stains and discoloration. Your provider repeats this process several times until you achieve your desired results.

Teeth whitening treatment usually lasts four to six months. However, you can extend your results by practicing good oral hygiene, quitting tobacco use, and avoiding foods and beverages that stain such as blueberries, coffee, red wine, and colas.
