Q&A

General Questions

A dental crown is an oral prosthetic used to cover a chipped, decaying, severely discolored, or otherwise damaged tooth. Once placed, a crown envelopes the entire portion of your tooth that sits above the gum line. A crown makes your tooth stronger and improves its appearance. This makes it easier to bite, chew, and smile confidently.

At Silicon Valley Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, the team uses dental crowns to address a variety of common oral health problems. Your provider might recommend a crown to:

  • Protect a weak tooth
  • Support a tooth with a filling
  • Improve the appearance of a severely discolored tooth
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Make a cosmetic modification

The team also uses dental crowns to strengthen damaged teeth and worn down tooth enamel.

There are several types of dental crowns, including stainless steel crowns, gold crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, and amalgam crowns. However, at Silicon Valley Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr Cano prefers BruxZir Full Strength, BruxZir Esthetic for anterior teeth & IPS e-max. In some rare cases, he may use porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns to restore your tooth. Following an oral exam, your Silicon Valley Center for Cosmetic Dentistry provider can recommend a crown that aligns with your individual needs.

At Silicon Valley Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, the team will schedule two separate appointments for your crown treatment. Depending on how many crowns are done at that first visit, you might be here for one hour for that appointment—followed by a 30-minute appointment two weeks later for the crown’s delivery. Dr. Cano provides a local anesthetic and prepares your tooth to receive a crown. To do this, they carefully remove a thin layer of enamel from the top and sides of your tooth and take impressions of your tooth with dental putty. Your provider then sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that manufactures your crown. Two weeks later, you return to Silicon Valley Center for Cosmetic Dentistry for your second appointment. Your provider lines up your new crown and bonds your crown in place, and you leave the office with a fully restored tooth.

You care for your dental crown just like you would a natural, healthy tooth. Brush and floss regularly and visit Silicon Valley Center for Cosmetic Dentistry every six months for a professional exam and cleaning. To prevent damage to your crown, avoid bad habits like chewing on ice or biting your fingernails or hard candies. With proper care, dental crowns can last for years!
